Discover the thrill of trail hunting with the West Norfolk Hunt

Home: Headliner

What is trail hunting?

This is a sport where a scent based trail is laid (typically by a rider on a horse) across miles of countryside often with optional jumps or natural obstacles like streams or ditches. Hounds are tasked by the Huntsman to locate these trails and follow them which allows horse riders to enjoy the thrill of the chase in a modern and legal way.

See trail hunting in action

A trail can be laid over any ground either minutes or hours in advance of starting the hunt although the environment will always play its part in how easily the hounds can hunt. The videos below show a trail being laid and the West Norfolk Foxhounds immediately on the chase! Everyone is welcome to join us on any day's trail hunting. All our dates are published on this website. We have an Open Day on Saturday 14th September 2024 where we will be trail hunting from 11am onwards at Little Massingham, an estate which lends itself to fantastic spectator viewing over beautiful rewilded countryside. Come and have a look for yourselves - or join us on your horse. It's free to join on this day.
